you can go anywhere on this earth, you just need to live a travelers life. #commandstrength #travel #photography (Taken with Instagram)
Do you work to a set of rules? What dictates the way you attack each project? What rules do you follow to ensure an optimal result every time?
In this life there should be absolutely nothing that you are truly afraid of. If there is, then I suggest that you do absolutely anything to remove that fear. I’m in constant fear that my work will never be good enough, I can admit this. But instead of letting this fear consume me I use it as a motivational tool to try and produce better work.
As the famous Radiohead song goes, “No alarms and no surprises”
Life seems to be full of sneaky little surprises, don’t you think? You’re cruising along having the time of your life when the unexpected turns up and shakes you to your very core. Most of the time however there are warning signs that tell you it is going to happen.
Not really a surprise then, is it?
Some facts. Whatever your situation now it’s more then likely going to change.
Again, no surprise there.
So why do our lives seems so crazy and full of surprises? Because we are asleep most of the time.
WAKE UP! And nothing will ever be able to sneak up on you again.
Once you have made a plan and determined the pros and cons just get on with it. If you take to much time umming and aaahing then you will more than likely miss the opportunity. If you spend too long thinking or, heaven forbid, dreaming (though I believe this is one of the best things you can ever do) you may never get your act together and make a move. Once you have reviewed the options just go with it, get cracking, make it work. In business as in life that is the key. Not hesitating means no sitting around having endless meeting about the good the bad and the ugly of your idea/prospect/product.
Remember that some things are inevitable so you may as well just jump in the deep end or else you will be carried down stream.
No Doubt
Once you have settled on the idea, chased the lead, or released the product don’t go over it relentlessly. Move on. Once you have made the choice go with it 100%.
Commit to it.
Be confident.
And most importantly be yourself.
Once you have settled on a road, a path or at the very least a direction you need to follow it.
Do not doubt yourself or the route you are taking.
Know that it will work and that you will succeed.
Trust yourself and trust your judgement.
The older you get the more regrets you’re likely to have, it’s just how it works. If you have read any of the previous posts you might expect me to say that there is no room for regrets or “if onlys”.
Well, in actual fact it turns out that they are one of the most useful tools that you have access to, as long as you use them to make a difference in the future.
Photographers and creatives are very susceptible to the three kinds of “I wish I had done that” scenarios.
1. When you feel you didn’t react quickly enough on an opportunity and you missed out on “something”.
2. When you come across someone that has successfully executed or created something amazing and you wish you could have been the one that came up with it.
3. Thinking that given the right set of circumstances, gear, light, opportunity or start that you could have been rich and famous.
Note: I’m not saying that you are in this last group. Anyone committed to reading a lengthy posts/posts like this one is obviously focused and not in the last group – i.e. living a life of delusion.
Our industry and perhaps our world is divided into two groups: Those that look at what others have achieved with envy and those that look at what others have done as a motivational tool.
If you find yourself in the group that thinks I could have done that, created that, said that, photographed it that way then you will need to learn to follow it up with action.
Actions like these…
Most of the time you can learn to emulate what has been done and if you do you may find that it doesn’t necessarily fit the way you wanted it to or is not as rewarding as you initially thought.
Or
You might find that once the mystery is gone that you actually know a better way to do it. You can then apply this to your own situation to create something totally new or to do something that has never been done!
Exciting, isn’t it?
The best thing you can do is decide that you will no longer let possible opportunities pass you by.
Seize every opportunity and use those that may seem outside your reach as tools for the future.
Allow yourself to have no regrets.
